Sublimation printing is the right default for a full-colour football jersey design on 90%+ polyester dri-fit fabric — the dye bonds inside the fibres, so it won't crack, peel, or fade with wash and wear. DTF is the better call for logos on dark or cotton-blend shirts. Heat transfer suits fast name-and-number add-ons. Screen printing holds up well for one to four solid spot colours, like a crest, but isn't built for gradients.
Football jersey printing is the process of applying a design, colour scheme, crest, sponsor logo, or player name and number onto jersey fabric, using heat, pressure, or ink transfer rather than weaving colour into the fabric itself. It's distinct from buying a blank jersey off the shelf, and it's the step that turns a plain polyester shirt into a team's actual kit. In Malaysia, four methods cover almost every football jersey printing job: sublimation, DTF (direct-to-film), heat transfer, and screen printing. Which one is right for your order depends on your fabric, your design's colour count, and your budget — not on which method sounds the most advanced.
Sublimation printing starts with your design printed in reverse onto special transfer paper using sublimation ink. That paper is pressed against polyester fabric under heat, typically around 190–210°C, and pressure for roughly 45–60 seconds. At that temperature, the solid dye converts directly into a gas, skipping the liquid stage entirely, and the gas opens the polyester's fibre structure just enough to bond inside it. When the fabric cools, the fibres close back up with the dye locked inside — not sitting on the surface as a layer, but as part of the fibre itself.
That's the whole reason sublimation resists cracking, peeling, and fading better than surface-applied methods: there's no layer to crack or peel. It also means the print carries zero texture — you can't feel where the design is on the fabric, which matters on a jersey that's against skin for 90 minutes of running. The trade-off is that sublimation only works on polyester content of roughly 90% or higher, and it needs a light or white base fabric, since the dye is transparent and a dark base would show through.
Sublimation isn't always the right tool. Here's where the other three methods genuinely earn their place on a football jersey order.
DTF prints your design onto a special film using a print head and a powder adhesive, then heat-presses that film onto the garment. Unlike sublimation, it works on virtually any fabric colour or blend, including dark and cotton-heavy shirts. It's the method we reach for when a club badge or sponsor logo needs to go onto a jersey that sublimation can't touch, or when you're adding print to a jersey that's already been sewn.
Heat transfer applies a pre-cut or pre-printed vinyl layer with heat and pressure. It's fast, works on almost any fabric, and is the standard choice for adding individual player names and numbers to jerseys that are otherwise finished — particularly useful when a squad expands mid-season and you need three more names added without re-running the whole print job.
Screen printing pushes ink through a fine mesh stencil, one colour per pass. It lays down a thick, opaque layer that's genuinely tough for one to four solid colours — a crest, a sponsor block, a number in a single colour — and it's the most cost-effective method at high volumes for simple designs. It struggles with gradients and photographic detail, where the layered ink would need to be too thick to stay flexible.

Almost every football jersey printing problem we've been asked to fix started with a design approved on-screen but never checked against a physical sample. Before you commit to a full order, run these four checks on a sample piece.
Stretch the fabric where the print sits. A properly bonded sublimation print shows nothing. A poorly cured DTF or heat transfer will show fine white cracking lines almost immediately.
Run a fingernail along the edge of a printed number or logo. A well-cured transfer has a smooth, fully sealed edge. Any lifting corner you can catch with a nail will only get worse in the wash.
Look closely at where two colours meet. Feathering or bleeding at the border usually means the ink saturation was wrong or the fabric shifted mid-press — a sign of a rushed job.
Ask what temperature and dwell time they run for your fabric. A shop that gives you a specific number is controlling the process. "We just heat press it" is the answer that should give you pause.
