Embroidery and printing are not interchangeable, and picking the wrong one costs you money, time, or a jersey that falls apart after ten washes. Embroidery stitches thread directly into the fabric, so it survives heavy washing, sweat, and years of match days. Printing — sublimation, screen printing, DTF, or heat transfer — lays or bonds color into the fabric surface, and it wins on full-color artwork, gradients, and large-area coverage that thread can't reproduce. Neither one is "better" across the board. The right call depends on your fabric, your design, your order size, and how hard the garment gets used. How Each Method Actually Works

You don't need a manufacturing tutorial to make this decision, just the parts that affect your outcome.

Embroidery

A digitized file guides a needle-and-thread machine to stitch your design directly into the fabric. On stretchy performance knit, we back the area with a cutaway or tearaway stabilizer first — skip that step and the fabric puckers under the stitch density.

Screen printing

Ink gets pushed through a mesh stencil, with one screen burned per color in the design. Screen printers typically work with mesh counts between 110 and 200 threads per inch — fine enough for bold graphics and lettering, not fine enough for photographic detail. The screen setup is what makes this method pay off only past a certain order size.

DTF (direct-to-film)

The design prints onto a film with a powdered adhesive layer, then gets heat-pressed onto the garment. No screens means no per-color setup cost, so DTF handles small, full-color runs that would be expensive to screen print.

Sublimation

Dye-sublimation ink prints onto transfer paper, then heat turns it into a gas that bonds permanently with polyester fiber. There's no ink layer sitting on top of the fabric — the color becomes the fabric. This is why full-sublimation jerseys don't crack, peel, or feel stiff, and it's the standard technique for competitive-grade cycling, football, and futsal jerseys.

Heat transfer / vinyl

A pre-cut or pre-printed design gets pressed on with heat. We use this mainly for player names and numbers, since each jersey in a team order is different, and embroidering a unique name onto every single piece isn't practical at volume or price.

Durability: Which One Actually Survives the Wash

Durability comes down to two things: what's bonding the color to the fabric, and how the garment gets washed afterward.

An under-cured screen print can start peeling after a wash or two, while a correctly cured one holds up for years — the difference isn't the ink, it's whether the shop hit the right curing temperature during production. Hot water and high heat in the dryer accelerate ink breakdown regardless of which printing method you use, which matters in Malaysia specifically: sports gear gets washed often, and sweat-heavy jerseys sometimes get washed hot to deal with odor, which shortens the life of a surface print faster than it would in a cooler, drier climate.

Thread choice affects embroidery durability just as much as curing affects printing. Polyester embroidery thread holds its color under repeated hot washing and chlorine exposure far better than rayon, which is why we use polyester — not rayon — for jerseys, workwear, and children's uniforms. Rayon has a slightly glossier finish, but it's the wrong choice for anything washed hard and often.

The nuance most guides skip: "embroidery lasts longer than printing" is only half true once sublimation enters the picture. Sublimation dye doesn't sit on top of the fabric the way screen print or DTF ink does — it's absorbed into the polyester fiber itself. That means it has nothing to crack or peel from in the first place. For 100% polyester jerseys, sublimation and embroidery are the two most durable options on the table, not embroidery alone.

Embroidery vs Printing Cost: What Actually Drives the Price

Cost rarely comes down to a single number — it comes down to order size, color count, and design density.

Embroidery pricing logic

You pay a one-time digitizing fee to convert your design into a stitch file, then a per-piece rate driven by stitch count. A small text logo digitizes and stitches cheaply. A dense, large crest costs more — and that cost holds fairly steady whether you order 10 pieces or 500, since there's no screen to amortize.

Printing pricing logic

Screen printing carries a setup fee per color, so it only becomes cost-efficient once your order size is large enough to spread that fee thin. DTF and sublimation carry little to no setup cost, so they stay efficient at low volume but don't drop as sharply per piece at high volume the way screen printing does.

Practically, that means embroidery or DTF is usually the more efficient choice for a small run, while screen printing pulls ahead once you're deep into bulk territory. Team jerseys — cycling, football, futsal, badminton

Sublimation for the main design and team colors, since it covers the fabric edge-to-edge without adding weight, and embroidery for the team crest or sponsor badge, where a raised, stitched finish reads as more premium than a printed patch. Player names and numbers go on with heat-transfer vinyl, since they change per player.

Corporate polos and uniforms

Embroidery is the default here. A stitched logo on the chest holds up to daily wear and frequent washing far better than a small printed logo would, and it reads as more professional on pique or twill fabric.

Event t-shirts and one-off runs

Quantity decides this one. Under roughly 50 pieces with a full-color design, DTF is usually the efficient choice. Past that volume with one or two colors, screen printing typically wins on price per piece.

Caps and headwear

Embroidery, essentially by default — the curved, structured surface of a cap doesn't suit screen printing, DTF, or sublimation well, and embroidered caps hold their shape and color for years.

Hoodies and jackets

Embroidery for a chest logo, printing (DTF or screen print, depending on order size) for a large back graphic. Combining both on one garment is common and not a compromise — it's usually the right call.

Why Most Team Jerseys in Malaysia Actually Use Both

Treating embroidery and printing as an either/or choice misses how most jerseys actually get made. A typical team order on our production floor sublimates the full jersey pattern and sponsor colors into the polyester fabric, embroiders the club crest for a textured, premium finish, and heat-presses individual player names and numbers, because those differ piece to piece. The finished jersey uses three methods, each doing the job it's genuinely best at, rather than forcing one technique to cover everything.

Is embroidery or print better?

Neither wins outright — it depends on the design and the fabric. Embroidery is better for logos, text, and crests on stable fabrics like cotton pique or twill, since thread resists cracking, peeling, and fading better than surface ink. Printing (specifically sublimation) is better for full-color, edge-to-edge designs on polyester knit, such as jerseys, since the dye becomes part of the fiber and can't peel at all. For a simple logo on a polo, choose embroidery. For a full-color jersey design, choose sublimation.

What are the disadvantages of embroidery?

Embroidery struggles with fine detail below a certain point size, since thread has physical width that ink doesn't. It's limited to available thread colors, so smooth gradients and photographic designs don't translate well. Dense, large designs cost more because machine time scales with stitch count, not a flat setup fee. Embroidery also isn't suitable for waterproof or water-resistant fabric, since the needle punctures the material, and it needs a stabilizer backing on stretchy performance knit to prevent puckering.

Does embroidery last longer than print?

Against screen printing and DTF, usually yes — stitched thread doesn't crack or peel the way surface ink can, especially if the print was under-cured. Against sublimation, it's closer than most guides admit: sublimation dye bonds into the polyester fiber itself, so it has nothing to peel or crack from in the first place. For jerseys and other 100% polyester knitwear, sublimation and embroidery both hold up for the life of the garment when done correctly.

What is better than embroidery?

Nothing is universally better — it depends on what embroidery can't do well. For full-color, all-over jersey designs on polyester, sublimation outperforms embroidery on color range and feel. For a one-off shirt with a photographic design, DTF outperforms embroidery on detail and cost. For 500 identical bulk tees in one or two colors, screen printing outperforms embroidery on price per piece. Embroidery still wins on logos, crests, and anything that needs to survive years of heavy washing.

Is embroidery more expensive than printing?

The wash count drops sharply if the print was under-cured at the factory or if the garment gets washed in hot water and tumble-dried on high heat, since heat is what breaks down the ink bond over time — cold wash, inside-out, low heat, is the standard care instruction for a reason.
